MILWAUKEE INDIAN SCHOOL
We read an article about the Indian Community School in a town just outside Milwaukee, Wisconsin. An article in a nearby newspaper featured it as, "Indian Schools Help Students Connect With Their Culture." It was written by Robert Gusche Jr., as a special to The Washington Post.
Smudging is one similarity between Nixyaawii Community School, and the Indian Community School of Milwaukee, which is located in a rough, urban neighborhood, versus our small, reservation community. Smudging is bringing the smoke of burning sage over your body. This is a morning activity that occurs at this school, which is a very traditional. For example, our Protocal, that takes place everymorning.
The School officials of The Indian Communtiy School, have a plan to increase their students' access to learn, and revive their native language, and culture. This is one of the major focuses of Nixyaawii Community School, as well as over 150 schools nationwide, designed to connect their native, and non-native students with the Native American heritage.
